Europe Calling: Can Bournemouth Really Qualify?
In 126 years of existence, AFC Bournemouth have never played in European competition. Not the Champions League. Not the Europa League. Not even the Conference League. This season, that could finally change.
Where Do We Stand?
With 3 games left, Bournemouth sit 6th in the Premier League on 52 points. Sixth place typically means Europa League qualification. There's even an outside chance of the Champions League if results elsewhere go our way — specifically if Aston Villa win the Europa League and finish in the top 5.
The gap is tight though. Just 4 points separate 6th to 12th place. Every single one of these last three matches matters.
What Would Europe Mean?
For fans like us who follow the team from afar, European football would mean:
- Thursday night football — midweek matches against teams from across Europe, many of them on TV
- New rivalries — imagine Bournemouth vs some team from Spain or Germany. The away days would be wild for those who can go.
- Better players want to join — European football attracts bigger signings. The squad would only get stronger.
- More matches to follow — more games means more content, more highlights, more to talk about at school
The Fixtures That Will Decide It
Fulham away is next. Then Manchester City at home. One more after that. If Bournemouth can pick up 5-6 points from these games, they should be safe in 6th. Even 4 points might do it depending on other results.
This Season in Context
Remember: Bournemouth sold Antoine Semenyo to Man City for a club-record 65 million in January. They lost Milos Kerkez to Liverpool in the summer. Multiple starters from last season have gone to Liverpool, Arsenal, PSG, and Real Madrid over recent windows. Pundits predicted a mid-table slog.
Instead? Record points. Record away wins. Record unbeaten run. A 19-year-old equalling Robbie Fowler's goal record. And now, a genuine shot at Europe.
If you'd told any Bournemouth fan this was coming five years ago, they'd have laughed. But here we are. Enjoy every second of it.
